Capture the impossible with expanded ISO sensitivity

Capture usable images in near total darkness with an impressive ISO expanded range up to 409600. The full-frame sensor coupled with innovative light gathering ensures limitless shooting possibilities.
Example image

Stunning bokeh and full-frame creativity

Realise beautiful 4K imagery with the creative freedom made possible by a full-frame sensor. Capture every detail from the scene with shallow depth of field and stunning bokeh for a truly cinematic look.

Cinematic colour science with S-Cinetone™

S-Cinetone colour, developed for Sony’s acclaimed FX9, is the default look on the FX6. Precisely tuned to meet the requirements of today’s content creators with rich colour and natural skin tones, it produces fresh and vivid images straight out of camera without grading, while retaining plenty of latitude for post production.
Example image

Large pixels deliver high sensitivity and low noise

The full-frame, back-illuminated, 10.2-megapixel Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor offers impressive light-gathering capability. Fast readout speeds and a dynamic range of 15+ stops deliver superb image quality with wide sensitivity and reduced noise.
Example image

Powerful BIONZ XRTM image processor

The BIONZ XR image processing engine matches the sensor’s high-speed readout with enormous processing power. Built with a future-oriented architecture, it delivers high-quality images faster and dramatically improves camera interface responsiveness.

Impressive dynamic range for limitless expression

At its base sensitivity of ISO8003, the FX6 offers optimal dynamic range for well-lit interiors and outdoor documentary shooting. An enhanced ISO 128003 sensitivity is designed for challenging low-light, morning and evening shots. The FX6 offers an exceptional 15+ stops1 of dynamic range—beyond the perception of even the human eye in many conditions—allowing for unprecedented creative freedom in colour grading and post.

Transform your shooting creativity

Fast Hybrid AF for accuracy and tenacity

The wide-area AF uses intelligent tracking and on-sensor phase-detection for tenacious subject tracking across almost the entire frame (6271-point focal plane phase-detection AF covers approx. 89% of the image area). The hybrid AF system delivers precise focusing even when shooting at shallow depths of field and at 120p high frame rates in 4K (QFHD)2.
Example image

Real-time Eye AF and Face Detection supported

Real-time Eye AF and Face Detection ensure accurate, stable focus acquisition for interviews, events and anywhere where precise focus on people is essential. Sophisticated real-time processing realises pinpoint eye focus even when subjects are looking down or up at steep angles, allowing the operator to concentrate fully on composing the best shot.

Example image

Powerful focus control for solo shooters

With AF Transition Speed selectable over 7 levels and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity over 5 levels, you can better convey your creative intentions when switching subjects or, for example, rack focusing.
Usage image

Lens-ring AF subject selection

When the AF Assist function is ON, rotating the focus ring instantly switches from auto focus to manual focus so that a different subject can be quickly selected. Auto focus operation resumes as soon as the user stops rotating the lens focus ring.
Example image

Auto focus area/position

For auto focus, you can set the target area among Flexible Spot, Zone and Wide, and change the position of the target area quickly during shooting by simply touching the LCD monitor.

4K3 120fps with every frame in focus

High Frame Rate shots can turn everyday action into a visual feast of elegant movement. The FX6 captures up to 120 frames per second (fps) at the 4K (QFHD) resolution. Slow and Quick (S&Q) modes give you full control over the captured frame rate from 1 to 120fps, allowing precise motion narratives, and up to a beautiful 5x Super Slow Motion (24fps output).

Built-in electronic Variable ND Filter

The FX6 features Sony’s unique built-in electronic variable neutral density (ND) filter. Unlike conventional optical ND filters, the electronic ND filter on the FX6 can be controlled linearly from 1/4ND to 1/128ND, or set to auto. Ideal in changeable environments, there’s no need to change filters as lighting conditions change or to maintain your depth of field.

Operability and expandability for professionals

Example image

Lightweight, modular and robust

Despite its amazingly light 0.89 kg body, the magnesium-alloy FX6 is more than tough enough for the rigours of real-world shooting. A detachable Smart Grip puts key functions at your fingertips and is easily adjustable with a single button.
Usage image

Grab-and-shoot mobility

Ideal for low angle shooting, the smart handle is part of the FX6’s modular design. It’s easy to reconfigure for any application, including mounting in a gimbal, drone or underwater housing.

Magnesium body and frame for high durability with light weight

To perform reliably in challenging environments, the main body, covers and top handle are made from a production-tested, lightweight magnesium alloy. The main frame achieves high strength and durability with minimum weight in order to maximise mobility.

Architecture to prevent thermal shut down

The custom ventilation system and chassis design help to prevent the thermal shut down of shooting1 at high frame rates and 4K (QFHD) resolutions. The number of heat sinks, the shape of air intakes and exhaust vents as well as the location of the low-noise fan2, and airflow paths have all been calculated with precision to ensure that optimum ventilation is achieved.

10-bit 4:2:2 recording

Record right on the camera with the amazing richness of 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 colour sampling, for far greater flexibility in image grading, post-processing and compositing.

All-Intra encoding available

As well as Long GOP, internal All-Intra encoding is now provided. This encodes every frame independently at bitrates up to 600 Mbps, to capture complex motion more accurately and allow more efficient editing workflows.

RAW video output is 4096 x 2160 or 3840 x 2160 data from the image sensor with a choice of 120/100/59.94/50/29.97/25/24/23.98 frame rates.
Example image

Shooting modes that match creator workflows

The FX6 offers shooting modes with preset looks like S-Cinetone that produce great-looking shots in-camera, or S-Log3/S-Gamut3 with Cine-EI mode that capture perfectly exposed images for post production.
Usage image

Scene File function allows easy look changes on-site

Four preset-scene file types are available for SDR shooting (S-Cinetone, Standard, Still, ITU709) and two for HDR (HLG Live, HLG Natural), plus 16 slots for imported user 3D LUTs, for your preferred look without post production.

Product image

Dual CFexpress Type A-compatible media slots

Dual media slots support CFexpress Type A cards, along with conventional SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II cards, for fast buffer clearance and data management. Simultaneous, relay, interval and proxy modes are supported.

Wireless monitoring and remote control

Connecting a smartphone or tablet to the camera with the Monitor and Control app enables wireless monitoring, high-precision exposure adjustment, and focus control on a larger screen.

Metadata facilitates editing in Catalyst

The FX6 records three types of metadata: image stabilization, clip flag and camera rotation. These can be useful when previewing and preparing to edit in Sony’s free Catalyst Browse or cost-effective Catalyst Prepare software9.
